In The Peace Strain, a character’s traits, whether it’s their sexual orientation, their race, or their mental health, is just one piece of their whole identity. Peace is a lesbian and Schwab lives with depression, but those traits don’t define them any more than a Southern accent or being tall defines someone else. These stories are built for the misfits and the seekers to see themselves reflected honestly on the page.
To ensure the authenticity of the characters, Scott Nelowet collaborated with a diverse team of 20 sensitivity readers. Together, they vetted every choice and every arc so that the Brohemian journey is an authentic and positive experience for every reader, regardless of their background.
It shouldn’t matter who is who or what is what. What matters is that the people sensitive to the issues within these books had the opportunity to provide feedback, and guess what? They were left speechless. See for yourself:

Peace Frog, it’s amazing, and to be honest, it was hard to put down. Some of my favorite parts were Corazon (shit, that guy is scary as hell), the love scene between Peace and Jen, the dirt bike race through the bayou, Sage saving his friends, the realistic ending, and of course, the hilarious parts that brought some lightness. The imagery is there; the characters have depth, and I absolutely love that the ending left the reader to imagine.

The book was really good and I really liked it! I liked the ending, but I don’t know if she died or not? And I really liked the gay characters you made. I was sad about Sage, even though he wasn’t my favorite character. Mikey was my favorite character because he was funny and cute. The story is interesting and not confusing. 10/10!

The entirety of Sage’s story was my favorite. When he is finally given the chance to be reunited with his grandparents, I teared up. His friendship with Lizzie was so special, and the juxtaposition of this tiny girl befriending this massive steamroller with a temper was so touching. Sage easily won my heart from start to finish. I think my favorite moment with him was when he crashed in to save Lizzie because he asked God to let him handle it this time. So amazing!
