From Resilience to Revolution

Scott Nelowet is an author, entrepreneur, and mental health advocate whose work explores one enduring question: How do ordinary people overcome extraordinary challenges? He is the author of the forthcoming How Are You Alive?: A Practical, Unfiltered Guide to Surviving Depression, Experiencing Joy, and Building a Life Worth Living, a book born from surviving nearly fifty years of medically resistant major depression and a promise to help others find their own way out. After living with medically resistant major depression since childhood, Scott entered his fifties with a bleak prognosis. Following a full day of neuropsychological testing, a leading neuropsychiatrist reviewed his results, looked up, and asked a question that would shape the rest of his life: “How are you still alive?” Rather than accepting that prognosis as the final word, Scott chose to prove that even the darkest diagnosis does not have to define a person’s future. While carrying the daily weight of depression, he earned a Master’s Degree in Education, served in the Peace Corps, built successful businesses, helped franchise organizations expand nationally, and created a life centered on his wife, Jennifer, and their daughter, Abby. That journey became How Are You Alive? It is not a memoir. It is a practical survival guide for people living with depression. Built on nearly fifty years of lived experience, it offers hope, tangible strategies to survive today, and a roadmap for discovering your own way out. The book was written to help readers survive while they search for the solution that works for them and to remind them of one life-changing truth: There is a way out. Scott brings that same belief in hope and resilience to his Young Adult fiction. His Peace Strain series, including French Fry Heaven and Peace Frog, follows a multicultural group of teenagers known as the Brohemians as they confront the forces that profit from division while pursuing a world transformed by peace. Committed to authentic representation, Scott collaborates with more than twenty sensitivity readers to help ensure honest portrayals of LGBTQ+, neurodivergent, multicultural, and other lived experiences. Whether writing nonfiction, fiction, or developing stories for film, Scott’s work is driven by one enduring conviction: Hope can change lives. He lives in Jacksonville, Florida, with his wife, Jennifer, and their dog, Winnie.

The “How Are You Alive?” Journey

Scott’s perspective is forged from a reality most experts deemed impossible. After being diagnosed with medically resistant depression, he was met with a clinical prognosis that offered little hope for a traditional life. When a top neuropsychiatrist famously asked him, “how are you still alive?” Scott didn’t just find an answer, he found a mission.

He transformed that survival instinct into a career as a successful entrepreneur, scaling a national franchise and leading hundreds of employees, proving that a diagnosis is a landscape to be navigated, not a final destination.

The Vision Behind the Brohemians

As a storyteller, Scott brings this same grit to the YA market. The Peace Strain series follows the Brohemians–a multicultural crew of misfits, dreamers, athletes, and outsiders who prove that world peace isn’t just a superpower, it’s a decision.

For authenticity, Scott collaborates with a dedicated team of over twenty sensitivity readers, vetting every narrative arc for honest representation of LGBTQ+, neurodivergent, and marginalized identities.

The Mission

Whether he is crafting his next found family adventure or documenting the survival blueprint in his nonfiction work, “How are you alive?”
Scott’s voice remains grounded and jargon-free.

Based on Jacksonville, Florida, he continues to write for the seekers, the rebels, and anyone who has ever been told that their path was impossible.
