Peace

“A promise is a promise, so let me tell you how all of this madness started. Want to join the crew? We’ll meet at the usual spot. The beauty of our friendship is that we are just as different as we are the same, and we love each equally. If you had asked me a few years ago if you thought our crew would be at the nexus of world-changing events, I would’ve said, “what’s a nexus?” and then I would hav etold you no way; we are too chill to be at the heart of all of this. But here we are.” – Huey

Peace is my closest friend. Everybody always asks, so as a preemptive strike, I’ll answer before you do. Yes, Peace is actually the name her parents gave her. There’s just no one quite like her. She’s really tall and super-pretty. I mean super-pretty. Like “bikes constantly crash from people gawking at her” pretty. Thing is, I’m not sure if it’s even possible for her to care less about how she looks than she does. She’s also the best athlete in school, and everybody knows it. It drives all of the coaches crazy because she won’t play any competitive sports.

Peace explained it once. “Why would I care if I am better than someone else or not? I’m just competing against myself and whatever I did before.”

She wears mostly old 1960s clothes, almost never brushes her long blonde hair (except out of her face), and would probably never wear shoes, and probably clothes, if she didn’t have to. I’m pretty sure she doesn’t own any makeup except one tube of red lipstick because, she says, “big red lips are fun!”

I remember right before I met her the first time, I was thrashing through the quad on my board, minding myself. Then out of nowhere, she came running up to me, told me that we would be lifelong friends, and asked if I would teach her how to ride a skateboard. We’ve been best friends ever since.

“Because I have a lesbian best friend, I get asked a lot about how I know that I’m not lesbian. I mean, if you look at Peace, she could make anyone interested; and I certainly love her with every fiber of my being. But I think that’s also how I know I’m not a lesbian. Because if you look at Peace and don’t immediately want to get married and settle down in a white house with a white picket fence until you are old ladies, you’re definitely not gay.”
